Steve Harding is founder and president of Steve Harding Design, Inc., a full service design firm headquartered in Houston, Texas. He received his B.A. from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia and then studied for two years with renowned Swiss graphic designers Armin Hoffman and Kurt Hauert, and German typographer Wolfgang Weingardt at the prestigious Basel School of Design, in Basel , Switzerland .
Upon returning to the United States , Steve worked in New York for Lance Wyman, designer of the graphic programs for the 1968 Mexico Olympics, Mexico City subway, and numerous other well known environmental graphics programs. Steve's first assignment was the design of the Washington , D.C. Metro system map. The project was featured in Print Casebooks, Best in Environmental Graphic Design.
Steve next moved to Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania where he took a position at the Westinghouse Corporate Design Center . In his five years at Westinghouse he developed identities, corporate communications publications, and industrial packaging programs for numerous Westinghouse divisions and subsidiaries. Much of Steve's work at Westinghouse Design Center was focused towards broad segments of the energy industry such as Westinghouse Nuclear, Energy Management Systems and Services, Steam Generation, and Transmission and Distribution. While with the Westinghouse Corporate Design Center Steve had the distinct honor and pleasure of working with Westinghouse design consultant Paul Rand.
Following Westinghouse, Steve moved to 3D/International, a large international multidisciplinary design firm in Houston , Texas where he served as design director for the graphics division for eight years, becoming the youngest Senior Vice President in the company's history. During his tenure at 3D/I Steve directed the development of corporate identity, corporate communications, environmental graphics, and facilities design projects for clients Trammell Crow Company, Gulf Oil Products Company, Granada Land and Cattle Company, Premier Angus, Inc., Texas Medical Center, M.D. Anderson Hospital, South Shore Harbour, Cinco Ranch, and the American Club, Hong Kong. Steve brought another dimension to 3D/I's services by leading a team of designers, producers, craftsman and fabricators in developing and delivering the 200,000 sf Singapore National Exhibition in Singapore in ten months.
Steve moved from 3D/I to form the Douglas Harding Group in 1987. As design partner with DHG, Steve continued to direct award winning projects for premier clients including environmental graphics programs for the 4,000,000 sf Chrysler Technology Center, Aurburn Hills, Michigan, the American General Center, Houston, and 191 Peachtree Tower, Atlanta. He developed retail facility and graphic merchandising programs for Conoco, Inc. Houston which was awarded the POPAI Gold Award, Best of Show, and Best of Category and facilities and design standards for Pennzoil Inc. which received the Public relations Society of America, Best of Category award. Other environmental graphics projects directed by Steve include themed graphics for Euro Disney Hotel Santa Fe and Hotel Cheyenne, Paris , France .
Steve formed Harding Design in 1992, which has grown to Steve Harding Design, Inc. This comprehensive corporation has a special emphasis on exhibit and museum planning, design and film projects.
Our commitment to excellence is illustrated not only in our museum and exhibit work but also in our master planning, and environmental graphics programs completed throughout the state and region. Hallmark environmental graphics and wayfinding projects include the Houston Zoological Gardens, the Wortham World of Primates, Union Stations in Meridian, and Jackson Mississippi, and Eagle Pointe Recreational Center and Golf Course, Mont Belvieu, Texas.
We have excelled in the area of museum and exhibit planning and design, implementing the Nolan Ryan Center , the Kenedy Ranch Museum of South Texas and corporate exhibits for Compaq, Inc. And we are presently developing corporate exhibits Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P. The Texas State Preservation Board awarded Steve Harding Design the
State of Texas Visitor Center housed within the 1856 Old General Land Office Building on the Capitol Complex Austin, Texas. Recently, Steve Harding Design was honored to receive the commission to design the exhibits and environmental graphics program for the George W. Bush Childhood Home, Midland Texas .
A documentary film produced by Steve Harding Design with StoneFilms of Texas, for Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P., on the life and career of Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski, received two prestigious Telly Awards including national winner for Best Documentary.
